How to Become a Freelance Writer
Writing encompasses so many different genres, fields and niches. To say you want to be a freelance writer is great, but there is a lot more thought that goes into it. While you might think the broad term “freelance writer” means more flexibility, more jobs, and more money, it’s actually not that simple.
So what can you do as a freelance writer? The options are endless, but there are a few steps you need to tackle to get started.
Pick the Right Niche to Become an In Demand Writer
By defining what kind of writing you want to do and in what niche, you’re going to be more qualified for exclusive, higher paying jobs. Trust me on this, I fought having a niche for SO LONG but after I finally gave in, I was able to land more jobs about topics I really enjoy!
Defining a niche can be overwhelming and confusing. You want to make sure you enjoy writing and learning about the topic or industry you choose, but you also want to make sure you’re going to be able to make money from it. Jorden from the Creative Revolt has a great blog post on lucrative niches, so be sure to check it out!
You don’t necessarily even have to have experience or be a know it all about the niche you pick either. As long as you’re willing to dig in and tackle the research that comes along with it, you’ll be able to land jobs easily.
Some of the more lucrative niches are:
- Real Estate
But how do you pick your niche?
The key is to choose something you actually care about, have experience in, or are willing to spend the time researching.
Did you work in the finance industry for a few years? There’s your niche!
PICK A WRITING STYLE
Now that you’ve settled on a niche, you need to decide what kind of writing you’re going to do.
Some popular writing styles include:
- Blog posts
- Research articles
- Case studies
- White papers
- Website copy
- Press releases
Picking a style is going to help you market yourself on your business page for Facebook, your website, and even LinkedIn. If you choose marketing as your niche and blogging as your style, you can market yourself as a Marketing Blogger and narrow the field down even more.
Keep in mind that it’s okay to be broad here because the key is to be an expert in a niche over a style of writing. Though, it’s great if you’re experienced in things like SEO and keywords, especially if you’re doing web based writing.
CREATE WRITING SAMPLES
As a new freelance writer, you probably don’t have much for writing samples. That’s okay, though! You just have to create your own and self publish them! This can be done on LinkedIn, Medium, or even your own blog.
Brainstorm some topics that fit your niche and write a short article or blog post about it. Make sure you use reputable sources and that your voice matches your chosen industry! Once you have a sample and have published it on the platform of your choice, you will have a link to show potential clients.
There you have it! Once you have your niche defined and some samples, you can get to work setting up your writer’s website and portfolio. Then it’s time to start pitching!
